Good news for public history students! I’m always a little suspicious of newsmagazine rankings of these sorts of things, but it’s still an encouraging sign.

This will resonate with those who were in my American West course. This AOLNews piece ( Obama Children’s Book Ignites Controversy ) discusses a political flap over President Obama’s new children’s book about notable figures from American history
I would argue the headline is rather misleading, as the controversy is in fact “ignited” by political opponents seeking to make hay out of any possible source, not Obama’s interpretation of Sitting Bull that has been fairly standard for the last, I don’t know, 40 years or so. The discussion among historians in the second half of the article is pretty compelling.
A good piece in the NY Times about the Park Service’s efforts to increase awareness and usage by black Americans. Certainly some echoes here of Jim Weeks’ discussion about predominantly white audiences at Gettysburg…

Also, the American Historical Association has lots of other resources relating to public history education and employment. See them at http://www.historians.org/info/public.cfm
Haha…some preservation humor; too good not to share. It’s particularly impressive how they nail the “heritage” rhetoric used in preservation discussions. Enjoy!
The Boston Globe has a nice piece on the Paul Revere house, and its efforts to expand and evolve. About halfway through, there’s also a quite fitting discussion about the longer history of the house and its relative neglect until the 20th century.
Newsweek has a compelling web presentation of images from the Burns photographic archive (Note: some images contain controversial content – “parental discretion advised”)
